History of Costa Rica Human habitation can be traced back more than 10,000 years but it appears Costa Rica was sparsely populated and a relative backwater in the pre-Columbian era. There is little sign of major communities and none of the impressive stone architecture that characterized the more advanced civilizations of Mesoamerica to the north and the Andes to the south. When Columbus arrived near Lim ¢Ã‚ ¢n on September 18, 1502 on his third and last voyage to the Americas, there were probably no more than 20,000 indigenous inhabitants They lived in several autonomous tribes, all with distinct cultures and customs. Costa Rica's only major archaeological site is at Guayabo, 30 miles east of San Jos‚‚, where an ancient city, dating back to 1000 B.C. and though to have contained 10,000 people at its peak, is currently being excavated. Many interesting gold, jade and pottery artefacts have been found throughout the region and are on display in several museums in San Jose. The Indians gave Columbus gold and he returned to Europe with reports of a plentiful supply of the yellow metal. But the adventurers who arrived to cash in found only hostile Indians, swamps and disease for their trouble. Several early attempts to colonize the Atlantic coast failed for the same reasons and for almost half a century Costa Rica was passed over while colonization gathered pace in countries to the north and south. In 1562, the Spanish main's administrative center in Guatemala sent Juan Vasquez de Coronado to Costa Rica as governor and Cartago was established as the capital the following year. With no Indian slaves to work the land, the colonists were forced to work the land themselves, scratching out a meagre subsistence by tilling small plots. The impoverished colony grew slowly and was virtually ignored by the Spanish rulers in Guatemala. By the late 18th century, the settlements that would buela had been founded and exports of wheat and tobacco were making economic conditions somewhat better. Central America gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. The news reached Costa Rica a month after the event. The question of whether Costa Rica should join newly independent Mexico or join a new confederation of Central American states resulted in a bitter quarrel between the leaders of San Jose and their counterparts in Cartago and Heredia. A brief civil war in 1823 was won by San Jose and Costa Rica joined the confederation.

The Devil from “Young Goodman Brown” Nathaniel Hawthorne

Character Analysis of: The Devil Sometimes there is a feeling that reeks of â€Å"no†, because what is about to be done is immoral, but there is an even larger, overpowering feeling that says â€Å"yes†. This, in the minds of many can be interpreted as the devil working his way into our in our daily lives. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†, the devil does just that. The devil is not, in fact, the main character but has the most impact on Goodman Brown. The devil has worked his way into many of the puritan’s lives, leaving them with horrid secrets to bear. But, the devil worked his way into Goodman Brown’s soul, which leaves him spiritually dead before he actually dies. The devil is a part of mans everyday life whether it is liked or not. In â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†, Hawthorne makes this clear by using different characteristics, actions, symbolisms, and the relationship that the Puritans have with the devil. The devil is a very sly but wise character; he will try to find ways to make a man sin without, man, necessarily knowing about it. The devil has many different personas, but to Goodman Brown he looks like a normal man from the village. This is an example of a wise decision, because looking like a â€Å"normal† man from Salem makes him seem more trustworthy and more attractive to Goodman Brown. The devil makes several wise decisions that put himself ahead of man. The most important and only goal that the devil has is to get Goodman Brown so far lost into sin, â€Å"the forest†, that he can no longer find his way out, or â€Å"his faith†. The devil is trying to get Goodman Brown away from the holy Puritan lifestyle, tempting him to leave the safety of his home and head to the uncertainty of the forest. In the mid 1800’s the Puritans thought of the forest as being the â€Å"devil’s domain†, or the â€Å"devils breeding ground. † They associated the forest with Native Americans, which in that time the Puritans thought that if you didn’t believe in â€Å"the God†, then you were of the devil. The devil is consistently referred to, in the text, as â€Å"his fellow-traveler†, this could be symbolic for the fact that they both are traveling to the same place, or that they have sin in their lives and were headed in the same direction. The devil is never far from his staff, nor is he without knowing its location. His staff symbolizes the snake from the Garden of Eden, and the sin in life. He can get where he needs to be very quickly, this and the fact that Goody Cloyse’s broomstick flies leads me to think that witchcraft and the supernatural play a big part in the lives of these characters. Throughout the story the devil does not change his view on life, the way he acts, or the way he treats others. These characteristics make him a flat character. Hawthorne hints that the devil could be Goodman Browns father; this creates a link between these two main characters. This could mean that the devil and Goodman Brown actually are related or that the devil is actually Goodman Brown’s internal opposing force, almost as if he had multiple personalities. The devil tells Goodman Brown that he has, â€Å"†¦been as well acquainted with your family as with ever a one among the Puritans†¦Ã¢â‚¬  this means that everyone in the Puritan world has met with the devil himself. This may also mean that all of the Puritans have a secret sin that they have to bear for the rest of their lives. The devil found his way into Goodman Brown’s soul and vanquished faith. The rest of Goodman Browns life was lived with excruciating pain, not physical pain but emotional pain. He was able to see what everyone was hiding behind their own personal mask. Goodman Brown lived the rest of his life not with the devil on his right shoulder but with the devil as this conscious.

You begin to panic, yet you don’t want to wake anybody up, convincing yourself it’s nothing you fall back asleep. After waking everyone up, you decide to call Animal Protection Hotline and explain to them that a black bear appears to be outside your cabin. They send a specialist to remove the bear, so out of curiosity you ask where the bear is going to be taken. They say that it will be held at the local zoo where he will be residing now and a zoologist will care for it. While many people think that zoology only deals with zoo animals, conservation and animal relocat ion are important parts of the field of zoology. Zoology is the intense research of animals, dead or alive, and the caring for their well-being as well as ensuring species management and survival. When you mention zoology plenty of people link it to zoos and caring for animal habitats, yet they don’t know that Zoology originates from Ancient Greek. Zookeepers want to inform doctors in the veterinary field if they believe the animal is not health because they want to prevent death. They are also responsible for grooming, exercising, and training the animal. Exotic animals are similar to humans because if they don’t get the right amount of exercise they can have health complications. It would be unsatisfact ory if the animal was to attack a visitor, therefor; they train the animal to stay inside of their habitat and away from visitors. The last important responsibility a zookeeper has to obtain as part of their job is speaking with visitors and/or presenting information about their specie. In the majority of zoos they will have scheduled hours when the zookeepers comes to speak to the public. He was also known for being a lepidopterist which is a person who studies or collects butterflies. The last most credible zoologist is James Henry Fleming who was known for studying birds and collecting information. He maintained an enormous library revolving ornithological which was donated to â€Å"The Royal Ontario Museum† when he passed away. (11) Other zoologist that were extremely recognizable in the nineteen century were; Lamark, Curvier, Geoffroy St. Hiliare, Goethe, Owen, and Oken. (6) A zoologist doesnt only have to have a passion for animals; they also have to have a flexible work schedule. Zoologists usually work from Monday through Friday, but have to be able to work most desirable Saturdays or Sundays. (9) This is major if you are working in zoos as zookeepers because the large portion of tourist will visit on weekends and need someone to guide them. The hours you work will most likely not fluctuate because you will work since the time the facility opens till when it closes. Unless you have to stay overnight to observe an animal or they need you to care for a certain animal. (9) Usually a zoologist will relocate to different continents that have a different climate to explore animals in their natural habitat. Such as Australia because they have a variety of exotic animals that you would not necessarily see in The States. Strengths to becoming a zoologist would be to have the patience to observe animals for a long period of time. (9) Another major factor would consist of you being able to work indecently and not count much on working in teams. (5) You should also be able to do in depth research and be able to explain your research to people who are not acquainted with the study of animals. (9) It is difficult to obtain a job as a zoologist because there is only a certain amount of places that hire you. As for places that would employ you it would be universities, government research institutions, NHS, medical research companies, museums, culture organizations, zoos, wildlife trusts, and environment protection agencies. (9) Zoology consists of the study of animals and your desirability to physically interact with them, so you can write profound research of the specie you are investigating. In conclusion, Zoology had been around for centuries starting when Aristotle introduced the study of animals to the world. Hundreds of other specialists were intrigued by this study, which lead to the field of zoology. Anybody with a minimum bachelor degree in biology or animal study could pursue a career in zoology. There are a variety of different positions in this field such as, zoo keeper, wildlife educator, researcher, and wildlife rehabilitate. Depending on your position and how many years of experience you have you will get paid a bit more each time. One of the greatest concepts that zoologists are trying to figure out are if different species have common ancestors. Or if two different species were to interbreed they would create new specie into society. There are hundreds of zoologists who have participated in the research of animals, but there are a few that are recognized for their ideas. Zoologists will dedicate their lives to studying exotic animals and helping maintain c ertain species from extension.
